CEMR expresses support for the mayor of Caracas
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) shares its deep concern and support to the mayor of Caracas (Venezuela), Antonio Ledezma, who was arrested last 20 February, by national security forces.

The principles of decentralization and local democracy should be safeguarded as pillars of a democratic society, and as a guarantee for the independence of local and regional politicians to exercise their right to freedom of expression and political pluralism.

I would like to reiterate the importance and the fundamental role that local government plays in the defense of citizens’ rights, sustainable urban development, reduction of social segregation and the fight against climate change,” says CEMR secretary general, Frédéric Vallier, "The pursuit of these goals will not be possible without respect for local democracy".

In this regard, CEMR joins its Spanish association (FEMP) and its global organisation (UCLG) to recall the vital role of local government as a force for sustainable development, and the value of decentralization in any democratic society.
