European elections - 13.03.2019

Join us for a lively debate between MEPs, local and regional leaders
With just 10 weeks to go until the European elections, discussions are underway on the future of Europe. While many views differ as to how to change Europe, one idea is gaining momentum among citizens: Europe must urgently connect with its citizens and be better rooted in its territories. In other words, it must take a local shift.

What are the differences between the European Parliament’s main political groups on this issue? And what solutions can be put on the table to get Europe back on track?

Come and join the discussions on 9 April, at Brussels City hall, for a lively and high-level exchange between mayors, local and regional leaders, and Members of the European Parliament.

The event will be an opportunity to outline a series of proposals to make Europe more citizen-inclusive, locally driven and anchored in its territories. It will be structured around quick exchanges, in a ping-pong format on pressing issues such as cohesion policy, citizen participation, climate and environment, governance and the Sustainable Development Goals. The full programme is available in  English and in French.

The list of representatives of political groups and parties includes Iskra Mihaylova (ALDE), Saskia Bricmont (Greens/EFA), Maria Arena (S&D), Jan Olbrycht and Dara Murphy (EPP).

The Council of European Municipalities and Regions and its member associations will be represented by Stefano Bonaccini, President of Emilia Romagna Region (Italy); Carlos Martínez Mínguez, Mayor of Soria (Spain); Rainer Haas, President of Ludwigsburg County (Germany), Carola Gunnarsson, Lord Mayor of SALA (Sweden) and Marc Cools, Municipal councillor of Uccle (Belgium).

The event will be moderated by CEMR Secretary General, Frédéric Vallier. Also worth noting: the discussions will only be conducted in English.
