08/09/2009 - Lille signs up to CEMR's Charter for gender equality

Lille has joined the over 900 European cities, regions and local governments who have signed CEMR's Charter for equality of women and men in local life.
 
The Charter has been elaborated by the Council of European.Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and contains a wide range of commitments to promote equality, across the range of its services and responsibilities.
 
Other local and regional government having recently signed the Charter include the city of Munster, French regions of Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes, the city of Santander (Spain) and of Valence (France). 
 
All together, more than 900 local and regional governments from 26 EU countries have signed the Charter.
 
Background information
 
The Charter was launched at CEMR's General Assembly, in Innsbruck, on 12 May 2006. It is currently available in 20 languages on CEMR's website.
 
CEMR received financial assistance from the European Commission (DG Employment and Social Affairs) for the development and drafting of the Charter.
