Municipal authorities
The municipal council (obcinski svet) is composed of members elected by direct universal suffrage for a four year-term. This deliberative assembly appoints deputy mayors within its members, upon proposition of the mayor. The council is responsible for making the fundamental decisions in a municipality.
The mayor (zupan) is elected by direct universal suffrage with a four-year mandate. He is the executive body of the municipality. He also represents the municipality and heads the administration.

Note : Municipalites are divided in municipal sections with their own council elected by the population. The council of the municipal section may enact recommendations to the municipal council.
Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, and ten other municipalities, have the status of urban municipality (mestna obcina). This status gives them new competences laid down by law.
