Equality of women and men in local life

Gender equality - 03.02.2004

Italy, Greece and Portugal lag behind
The Italian organisation for the promotion of gender equality, Arcidonna, claims that Italy, Greece and Portugal are bottom of the "gender equality in politics" league.

Arcidonna conducted a survey in collaboration with the Italian Ministry for Employment, in the framework of the EU program Equal. The survey shows that the Italian delegation at the European Parliament has the lowest ratio of women (11,5%), followed by the Greek delegation (16%) and the Portuguese (21%).

The "most equal" delegations are the Belgian (44% of women elected), the Finnish (43.9%) and the French (43.7%).

The survey also covered economic and social aspects of gender equality.
