Mayor of Paris elected president of world association of towns and municipalities
The mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë has been elected president of the world organisation of local government, United Cities and Local Government (UCLG).
The election of the new president was the highlight of UCLG's second world congress, in Jeju (South Korea, 28-31 October 2007). Four co-presidents were also elected:
· Paco Moncayo, Mayor of Quito, Ecuador
· Zhang Guangning, Mayor of Guangzhou, China
· Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul, Turkey
· Amos Masondo, Mayor of Johannesburg, South Africa
· Zhang Guangning, Mayor of Guangzhou, China
· Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul, Turkey
· Amos Masondo, Mayor of Johannesburg, South Africa
Some 2,000 participants from 110 countries, attended the congress entitled "Changing cities are driving our world".
UCLG's new presidency has identified its priorities: protecting the environment, expanding local democracy and making the Millennium Development Goals a reality.
Delegates also adopted the Jeju Declaration that announces the next steps to ensure the voice local government is heard loud and clear on the world stage.
The final day of the congress also saw the launch of UCLG´s global report on decentralization and local democracy (GOLD), the world's first study dedicated to decentralization.
