Cross-border healthcare - 28.10.2010

CEMR welcomes the Public Health Committee vote on cross-border healthcare
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) welcomes the adoption of the draft directive on patients' rights in cross-border healthcare, and more particularly the strengthening of the issues of prior authorisation and reimbursement of costs.
The vote took place on Wednesday 27 October 2010 within the European Parliament Committee on Public Health.
The draft directive reflects a number of positions taken by CEMR in its policy position on the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare and presented in a letter sent to MEPs on 20 October 2010.
Indeed, local and regional authorities are very much affected by this directive given that they generally act as healthcare providers and are responsible for the organisation and financing of hospitals.
The draft directive on patients' rights in cross-border healthcare is to be voted in the European Parliament plenary on 18 January 2011.
