Equal opportunities: CEMR to draft charter on women's role in local life
The first meeting of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions's (CEMR) project on the charter on women in local life will take place in Bilbao on 10-11 June 2005.

The meeting will be chaired by the president of the association of Basque municipalities (EUDEL), Karmelo Sainz de la Maza Arrola, and the chair of CEMR's committee of women elected representatives of local and regional authorities, Vicenta Bosch Palanca.

This first meeting will focus mainly on agreeing on the content and themes of the future charter.

The charter will finalise CEMR's Europan town for equality project (*). Its aim will be to list the obstacles to a greater role for women in local life, and to identify possible solutions.

(*) "The European town for equality" was a CEMR initiative funded by the European Commission; it was part of the EU's 5th action programme for equal opportunities. Its aim was to establish a methodology towards achieving the equality town. This virtual town will then be used as a model enabling local governments to improve the situation in terms of men/women equality.
