Local administration - 17.06.2016

Big ideas for big reforms? A seminar to look at the do's and don'ts
In times of crisis, decrease in revenue and workforce reductions year after year, reorganisation of local administrations is on the lips of all political observers and decision-makers. But how can they do it?

To answer this question, and to provide concrete and operational help to political and administrative decision-makers, CEMR, OLA and Comenius University are organising a seminar from 30 June to 2 July, in Bratislava (Slovakia).

This event, named “The impact of regionalisation, intermunicipal cooperation and metropolitansation on local, regional and central governments in Europe”, will help identify solutions, good or bad, in terms of organisational changes in local administration in Europe. It will provide a large overview of all recent evolutions in local administration systems.

There will be 4 different workshops:

1.    Regionalisation, Decentralisation and Federalism
2.    Modern Governance in Rural Areas
3.    Regionalisation and Intermunicipal Cooperation: Taking on the Challenge of Metropolitanisation
4.    Metropolitanisation in Italy

The seminar will gather academics and local politicians, such as the mayor of Roulers and president of the association of Flemish towns and cities (VVSG), Luc Martens; regional councillor of Lombardia, from CEMR’s Italian association (AICCRE), Carlo Borghetti; local councillor of Tours, from the French association of European municipalities and regions (AFCCRE), Antoine Goldberg; and the prefect of the county of Virovitica, from the association of Croatian counties (HRVZZ), Sanja Bošnjak.

This seminar is a logical extension of the one organised in Bologna in October 2014.

Useful information

Interpretation will be provided in French, English and Slovak.

Online registrations are open until 30 June 2016. For more information, please contact the Observatory for Local Autonomy (OLA).
