Equality - 12.06.2006

CEMR's charter for equality presented at the Council of Europe
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) has presented its European charter for equality of women and men at the ministerial conference on equality, in Stockholm, on 9 June 2006.

Patrizia Dini, from the Italian association of CEMR (AICCRE), told the members of the Council of Europe that the charter must encourage local leaders to take a strong stance in favour of equality between women and men in Europe.

Various ministers attended the meeting, including the Spanish minister for Social Affairs, Jesus Caldera Sanchez-Capitan; the French junior minister for Social Cohesion and equality, Catherine Vautrin; and the Swedish minister for integration and gender equality, Jens Orbach.

CEMR's European charter for equality of women and men in local life was launched at CEMR's general assembly, in Innsbruck on 12 May 2006. Its main aim is to encourage local politicians to take and implement the measures listed in the charter to achieve equality between women and women in their municipality, town, city or region.
