Age-Friendly Environments (AFE-INNOVNET)

Introduction

Europe's population is ageing. According to Eurostat, the number of people over 65 will represent 29,5% of the total population by 2060. This figure might even reach 12% of the European population among citizens over 80.

In this context, the creation of environments adapted to every generations of society represents the best way to face demographic change, as they will ensure that citizens remain healthy, independent and autonomous longer into their old age. Such phenomenon represents a challenge for European cities, municipalities and regions, since they have to adapt everyday living environment – in domains like housing, transport or new technologies - to the needs and expectations of the ageing population.

In order to provide local government with a platform with concrete solutions when working on active ageing projects, CEMR joined the thematic Network on Age-Friendly Environments (AFE-INNOVNET) in 2014. Furthermore, AFE-INNOVNET aims at shaping the EU agenda on active and healthy ageing and the policy debate on demographic change at EU level.

Thematic Network on Age-Friendly Environments (AFE-INNOVNET)

AFE-INNOVNET brings together local and regional governments, research centres, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to work together towards age-friendly environments across the EU.

Our objectives:

  • To facilitate the exchange of good practices;
  • To stimulate local investment in domains having an impact on active ageing like information and communication technologies;
  • To develop tools targeted to local government: a participatory guide to actively involve end users in the decision making process of local government and a tool to assess the socio-economic impact of age friendly environments;
  • To ensure collaboration with international organisations such as the World Health Organisation;
  • To launch an EU Covenant on Demographic Change which will act as platform for local government that voluntarily committed to implement age-friendly environments initiatives

What is CEMR's role in the project?

CEMR is responsible of the mobilisation of stakeholders (local government, research centres and universities, industry and civil society organisations), the organisation of webinars and workshops to reinforce the knowledge of local government on active ageing and put them in relationship with the industry.

CEMR is a member of the steering group, which is made up of of 6 members: AGE Platform Europe; PAU Education; Polibienestar/UVEG; TNO and Louth County (Ireland).
