Gender equality in mourning
The former chair of CEMR's committee of women elected representatives of local and regional authorities, Vicenta Bosch Palanca has passed away on 30 December 2009.
Vicenta Bosch Palanca chaired the committee of women elected representatives from 2002 to 2008. She was the driving force behind the project "the town of equality" and later the European charter for equality of women and men in local life, to which some 1000 towns and cities have signed up.
Vicenta Bosch Palanca conveyed the message of European women elected representatives up to the United Nations, where, in 2000, the role of local and regional authorities was recognised within the Beijing+10 process (on women's rights worldwide).
The current chair of CEMR's committee of women elected representatives of local and regional authorities, Jocelyne Bougeard stated that the best way for us to honour Vicenta's is to keep working following her favourite motto: Half of our planet's inhabitants are women, therefore we ask for half the sky and half the power".
