Cohesion policy

Europe - 28.04.2004

Jacques Barrot takes the lead of Regional Policy DG
Jacques Barrot has been nominated by the Council on 26 April 2004, in Brussels, as the new European Commissioner responsible for regional and cohesion policy.

He is replacing the former Commissioner Michel Barnier who left his post at the end of March to become the new French Minister for Foreign Affairs. In his hearing at the Parliament's Committee for Regional Policy, Jacques Barrot reiterated his determination to develop a strong and modern cohesion policy in the enlarged European Union and the need of an effective cohesion policy based on economic and social aspects.

For the period 2007-2013, the new Commissioner wishes to strengthen administrative simplification, decentralisation, reinforce cohesion policy and give the Commission a more strategic role on future EU priorities.

Jacques Barrot was head of French President Jacques Chirac's UMP party in the national assembly. He also has political background at local and regional level in France, as Member of the Auvergne Regional Council from 1976 to 1986 and as Mayor of Yssingeaux from March 1989 to March 2001.
