On this occasion, local and regional leaders adopted a set of recommendations notably aimed at promoting more sustainable solutions so as to address local and regional challenges on an international scale.
The vast array of topics covered included the economic and financial crisis, the issue of recentralisation, climate change, local governance, cultural diversity, gender equality and the struggle against poverty.
In recognition of the rapid increase in urban population, as well as other challenges facing the cities of tomorrow, participants adopted a Manifesto dubbed 'The City of 2030". This joint commitment advocates, among other things, the development of democratic, inclusive cities with strong public services, fostering innovation, energy efficiency and regional partnerships.
The call for global recognition of decentralised governments in national and international legislation was another major highlight of the summit.
