Council of Europe - 28.05.2004
Giovanni Di Stasi elected president of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities
Giovanni Di Stasi (Italy) has been elected President of the Council of Europe's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (CLRAE). He takes over from outgoing president Herwig van Staa, of Austria.
Giovanni Di Stasi, 54, has been a member of the Italian parliament and President of the Molise region.
"The main issues in politics are not always handled as people want, because politics is too far removed from electors. Even so, the themes dealt with by the Council of Europe, and especially the Congress, are very close to citizens' wishes. " said Mr Di Stasi in a speech after his election.
