Mayors Adapt - 23.08.2016

New call open for town twinnings on climate change adaptation
Mayors Adapt, the Covenant of Mayors initiative on adapting to climate change, has launched a new series of town twinning activities and is calling for new towns and cities to participate. This initiative helps accelerate the implementation of climate adaptation projects through the exchange of good practices between towns and cities - following Mayors Adapt’s goal, which is for towns and cities to adapt and become resilient to climate change.

Towns and cities that are starting their adaptation have the opportunity to work to connect with mentor municipalities that have already developed successful resilience strategies. The learning municipality will travel to the mentor to learn how they were able to adapt to climate hazards; and get inspired to apply relevant strategies at home.

The call for applications is open until 12 September 2016, and the activities are scheduled from November 2016 to 20 January 2017. Participation is open to both Mayors Adapt or Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy signatories, and non-signatories, as long as they sign up before the visits start.

Interested towns and cities can find out more and download the application form here.

The Mayors Adapt initiative gathers local governments committed to adopt strategies to adapt to climate change in all relevant areas: public transport, water and energy supply or the building sector. Signatories commit to develop a comprehensive adaptation strategy or to integrate adaptation to climate change into relevant existing plans.

In October 2015, Mayors Adapt merged with the Covenant of Mayors into a new Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy which promotes an integrated approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
