Making public spaces more accessible: Good practices from Norway
Gentle ramps and doors wide enough for wheelchairs, ample public lighting to improve safety and electric sockets high enough for the elderly to reach without bending over: these are just a few of the way in which Norwegian municipalities and counties are making their public spaces more accessible.
The Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS) has published a new booklet showcasing local governments’ many initiatives in this area. The publication – entitled “Universal design contributes to an age-friendly society” – shows how outdoor areas, meeting places and buildings can all be made more accessible for the benefit of everyone.
Universal design is about creating inclusive communities where everyone can participate. KS hopes that by sharing some of its members’ practices, local governments can learn from each other and go further in creative inclusive communities for all.
