European Parliament and Committee of the Regions call for speedy agreement on funding of regional policy
The European Parliament and the Committee of the Regions have called fior a speedy agreement on EU's long-term financial planning, on 6 April 2005.

At the occasion of a joint conference on the future of cohesion policy, the European Parliament and CoR have issued a joint resolution. In it, they also express their opposition to renationalisation of cohesion policy and to any reduction in the regional policy budget.

CoR president Peter Straub stated that the European Commission, the Parliament and the Committee of the Regions stand side by side on this issue by warning against the dangers of any delay in implementing the new Structural Funds.

Regional Development EU Commissioner, Danuta Hübner, took part to the conference too. She said that it would be a political and financial disaster if there were to be no agreement; we need a deal by June.

CEMR vice president and French senator Louis Le Pensec expressed CEMR's support to the European Commission's proposal to create a "Regional Competitiveness" Objective.

He also welcomed the European Commission's commitement to decentralise the planning and management of Structural Funds, and reiterated CEMR's support to the Commission's proposal on the future financing of cohesion policy (€336 billion, O.46% of Europe's GNP).
