Lubelskie is the poorest region in Europe, Inner London the richest
The gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in the region of Lubelskie (Poland) is three times lower than the average in Europe (33%). At the other extreme, Inner London's GDP per capita is almost three times higher (278%) than the average, followed by Brussels, Luxembourg and Hamburg. These are some of the latest statistics delivered by Eurostat, the European Union's statistical information service.
All the regions in the new Member States' GDP per inhabitant is lower than the EU average, only Prague is above the average (138%). Among the 60 regions below the 75% level, sixteen are in Poland, seven in the Czech Republic and six in Hungary.
Among the older Member states, the regions of Spain, Greece and Portugal show, in general, lower results than EU average. Regions with the highest GDP per capita are in Germany, Italy, the United-Kingdom, the Netherlands, Austria and Belgium. The lowest ranked region amongst the older Member States is Norte in Portugal (57%).
