Social dialogue - 12.01.2004

13 January : Launch of the sectoral social dialogue committee in local and regional government
The European Commission will launch its 'sectoral social dialogue committee in local and regional government" on Tuesday 13 January 2004 (Centre Borschette, 14:30 - 17:30).

For the next two years, the chairman of CEMR's Employers' platform, Alexander Aagaard, will chair the committee. CEMR successfully campaigned to be recognised as a formal partner in the social dialogue since local and regional authorities are amongst the biggest employers in Europe.

Director General of the Commission's DG Employment, Odile Quintin, will open the inaugural meeting.

The main purpose of the meeting is to formally adopt the committee's rules of procedure and this year's work programme.

Promoting telework

The telework statement will be signed at the meeting. The statement is the result of two years of discussions between CEMR's Employers Platform and the European Federation of Public Services Union (EPSU). It sets a framework to help local/regional government and their civil servants agree on issues related to telework.

The statement will be signed by Alexander Aagaard for the employers, and by General Secretary of EPSU for the trade unions.
