Seville conference: Join local action towards sustainability!
How to foster sustainability in your city or town? What are the most recently developed tools that can support your city to accelerate sustainability? Find the answers at the conference on sustainable cities and towns, in Seville, from 21 to 24 March 2007.

The Seville conference "Taking the commitments to the streets" is expected to be a major gathering of mayors, council leaders, officials and experts working with sustainability. It will give insight into the achievements of European local governments in implementing the Aalborg Commitments and furthering local sustainability.

The first day will focus on how to implement the Aalborg Commitments activities at local level. CEMR president and mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl will debate with other high level representatives on 50 years of European integration, cohesion and sustainability.

On the second day, speakers will highlights the initiatives of local governments, networks and practitioners to meet the challenges set by the Aalborg Commitments. How to start and maintain a process for sustainability at local level? How to achieve ambitious policy-making to accelerate local sustainability? And how to best cooperate between local governments, networks and experts? These are some of the questions that will be raised during the day.

Finally, on the third day, the question will be addressed on how to achieve sustainable innovation in dialogue with citizens. The debate will be followed by a series of parallel happenings related to communication strategies, tools and support for local governments.

During the event, two sessions will be coordinated by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR). The session on "Social inclusion and migration" will highlight good local government practices, with a focus on integrated approaches based on partnerships with third parties (businesses, NGOs, the voluntary sector). Another session entitled "Winning mobility solutions" will look at ways to increase the public and political acceptability of sustainable transport measures.

The main speakers at the conference include representatives from the German Presidency of the EU; the Spanish government; the Committee of the Regions; mayors from cities such as Vienna, Seville, Palencia, Aalborg and Rome; as well as experts such as Dennis Meadows from the Club of Rome.
