Mayors to go beyond EU targets on climate change
A number of European towns have pledged to go further than the European Union in their efforts to tackle climate change.
 
The mayors of Grenoble (France), Delft (Netherlands), Växjo (Sweden) with the consent of.their counterparts from Kaunas (Lithuania), Miskolc (Hungary) and Vastseliina (Estonia) have signed the Grenoble declaration on 22 May 2008.
 
In it, they pledge to at least reach EU targets by 2020 such as a 20% reduction of greenhouse emissions, reaching 20% of energy consumption from renewable energies, 20% reduction of energy consumption.
 
The Grenoble declaration also calls the EU to promote and invest in renewable energies, to support the principle of a climate tax on energy, and to support local governments and their associations in their efforts towards sustainable energy and climate protection.
 
The Grenoble declaration was adopted at the general assembly of the CONCERTO - SESAC project on renewable energies.
