Mayors of Paris, Sao Paulo and Pretoria elected Presidents of the new worldwide local government organisation
The mayors of Paris (Bertrand Delanoë), Sao Paulo (Martha Suplicy) and Pretoria (Smangaliso Mkhatshwa) have been elected at the presidency of the new worldwide organisation of local government "United Cities and Local Governments", this Wednesday 5 May 2004.
The founding congress of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) was held in Paris between 2 and 5 May 2004. It brought together some 3,000 representatives of municipalities from over 120 countries, from Nepal to Benin, and from Australia to Mexico.
UCGL is the result of the merging of the three previous worldwide organisations of local authorities, IULA, FMCU and Metropolis. Its members are associations of local authorities representing different geographical areas; CEMR is the European section of the new organisation.
Delegates to the congress also approved the composition of UCGL's organs : the World Council (main governing organ) and the Executive Bureau.
UCGL's seat is in Barcelona, its secretary general is Elisabeth Gateau.
