The European Commission adopted on 26 November 2010 a €20 million action programme so as to strengthen its support to local and regional authorities in the Baltic Sea Region in terms of environmental protection and energy efficiency.

The funding will mainly concentrate on environmental projects with a cross-border impact in the Russian and Belarusian part of the region.

Other local and regional authorities, notably in EU member states, will also be eligible for financial support so as to encourage the development and transfer of practices and projects in the environmental sector.
