* Integrated sustainability management is when a city ensures that its urban development policies and projects abide by the three main pillars of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. It also involves the different stakeholders – citizens, private companies and civil society – in the policy-making process. For example, if a city wishes to build a motorway in order to enhance the economic activity of one of its neighbourhoods, it must notably consult with the aforementioned stakeholders and assess the potential environmental impact in order to ensure a balance between the three pillars.
