Covenant of mayors - 23.08.2017
National climate and energy policies : future perspectives in Latvia
This article was initially published by the Covenant of Mayors.
With 21 signatories, 1 National Coordinator and 1 Energy Agency already involved, Latvian municipalities are making significant steps towards implementing the Covenant of Mayors in Latvia, especially the new 2030 targets and the adoption of a joint approach to climate mitigation and adaptation.
The national policy context is also creating momentum for local governments' climate action, following the adoption of the new Energy Efficiency Law in March 2017, which establishes a Municipal Energy Efficiency Fund to finance the implementation of energy efficiency measures and energy management systems in Latvian municipalities. Furthermore, the Latvian Ministry for Environmental Protection and Regional Development will adopt a National Adaptation Strategy in the second half of 2017.
This workshop will thus be the occasion to discuss recent national policy developments and opportunities, look into good practices from Latvian Covenant signatories and reinforce a macro-regional Baltic approach through exchanges with local governments from neighbouring countries (Estonia, Lithuania). Feel free to have a look at the programme for more details.

Interpretation will be provided in English and Latvian.
