Making the case for a localised recovery: CEMR meets with the Secretary General of the EU Commission
CEMR, along with other local and regional government associations, met virtually with EU Commission Secretary General Ilze Juhansone on Wednesday (16 December). The meeting was an opportunity to share local perspectives on the Commission’s recently-published work programme for 2021.
“The Council of European Municipalities and Regions prides itself on the support that it has provided to the European Commission, allowing its members to provide input to the policy making process and help prepare better policies, which can lead to better results on the ground,” declared CEMR Secretary General Frédéric Vallier.
In particular, CEMR raised concerns regarding the exclusion of local and regional governments from the drafting of national recovery and resilience plans in the wake of COVID-19. The plans will spell out how hundreds of billions of euros in EU aid will be spent in each country.
Other discussed topics included the implementation of the European Green Deal, gender equality, disabilities and social rights. CEMR has long advocated for regular meetings with the EU executive to share the pulse of local and regional Europe.
