Check out the new classification of local government set up by the European Commission
The European Commission published a “Harmonised definition of cities and rural areas”, based on precise population density rates. One of the purposes of this classification will be to have a precise overview of the funding distribution in the framework of the 2014-2020 period of cohesion policy, for instance in domains like employment or education.
This “new degree of urbanisation” defines three categories of local government : cities (or urban centres), towns and suburbs and rural areas. -

Cohesion policy and youth employment are among the Greek priorities for its presidency of the EU
Since 1 January 2014, Greece assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Among its priorities for the next six months, it includes topics that are of concern to local and regional authorities and in which CEMR has been involved in the last years:
- Growth and employment - especially youth unemployment ;
- The implementation of the new Cohesion Policy (2014-202) with, for instance, a special focus on Community Led Local Development (CLLD) as an essential tool for local rural, urban and peri-urban development.

Spatial segregation in cities - 18.10.2013
URBACT releases 'Against divided cities in Europe' report to help cities develop public policies to improve social cohesion
This study presents an overview of how public policies influence segregation in cities. In order to help cities rethink the concept of spatial segregation and to take action, URBACT offers examples and practices used by various European cities that can help to break barriers that separate the population. URBACT is a European exchange and learning programme promoting sustainable urban development. -

The publication takes stock of the practices and models of urban-rural cooperation. It serves as a source of inspiration for better guidance and policy making at the EU level, addressing the issue of cohesion policy instruments in support of territorial urban-rural partnerships.
